A one-night stand, a surprise baby, and a mysterious stalker.

Mechanic Benjamin Starwell can’t stop thinking about Belle Hamlin, the ballsy musician he slept with and skipped out on months earlier. He never meant to get her pregnant, but he’ll do whatever it takes to win back her trust and be a part of his child’s life. His desire for Belle drives him to be a better man, but he’s worn thin with a garage to run and his estranged sister dumping her troubles on him.

Belle’s juggling impending motherhood, her indie rock career, and a stalker who’s determined to see her fail. Even though she’s desperate to get her priorities straight, she pushes aside her past hurt and welcomes Benji back into her bed. She never expects him to slip into her heart.

When the danger escalates, they face the greatest challenge of all—protecting their unborn child.

Excerpt

Peggy rubbed the transducer over Belle’s lower stomach again, and the fetus reappeared on the monitor. “It looks like Junior is an active one. You can’t feel it, Belle, but the fetus is somersaulting and kicking your stomach.”

Benji laughed as the baby flipped, and a sketchy white bottom consumed a good portion of the viewfinder. “Is he mooning us? We have a troublemaker on our hands.”

“I would say you’re to blame and I’m a complete angel, but I don’t want to jinx us.” Belle grinned, her panic attack subsiding. “We’ll probably be called into the principal’s office at least once a week.”

The baby shifted again. A fluttering noise echoed from the monitor.

He frowned. “What is that? It sounds as though it’s coming from underwater.”

“The heartbeat.” Belle’s gaze jumped to his. “Isn’t it awesome?”

“It sounds strong. How’s the rhythm, Peggy?”

The tech lifted her arm and moved her lips as she stared at her watch. “Smooth. I counted the heartbeat twice, and it rates at a steady 162 beats per minute. The heart is the first organ to develop, and it’s already pumping blood.” She pointed toward the chest as it slightly popped out.

“We didn’t see that last time.” Belle patted her cheeks. “The baby’s okay.”

He released a deep breath. “Good. I’ve stressed over nothing.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Her tears shimmered under the fluorescent light. “You can talk to me about anything, especially if it’s baby-related.”

“You’d already come to terms with the last ultrasound, so I didn’t want to upset you.”

“Oh, Benji.” She trailed her fingers down his jaw.

Her soft touch rolled through him like a hard kiss on the lips. A smile lit her beautiful face, and something he couldn’t name danced in her eyes. Hope, maybe?

  1. 162 beats per minute? Is that realistic> That’s twice a normal adult heartbeat. (But I know nothing about babies…)

    1. haha. I know nothing about babies either (I don’t have kids), so I did a lot of pregnancy research for this. 162 beats per minute is completely normal. 😉

  2. Sounds like a healthy baby. The answer to your question will be an interesting story

    1. Thanks a lot, Janet!! The baby (Lindy) is a precious little munchkin. <3

  4. Wow, that’s a fast heartbeat. But the baby’s ok? Thanks for sharing.

    1. Hey, Tena. Yeah, from what I read, a fast heartbeat is normal for fetuses at that gestation age. The baby is completely healthy. Thanks!!
