#BookReview – “Kilts and Kisses” by Victoria Roberts

Blurb

Since the deaths of her parents, Ceana Gunn has lived in the shadow of her uncle and his family. She wants nothing more than to see her clan the way it was when her father was still laird. But her uncle has other ideas. Ceana soon discovers that the only refuge to be found is in the last place she expects—the arms of her enemy.

Luthais MacKay wants to be left alone. His only interest is training his prized hawks. He certainly doesn’t have time to listen to the petty squabbling of his clan when his father travels to Edinburgh and leaves him in charge. But when Luthais discovers a mysterious woman on his lands, he’s determined to unravel her secrets…one layer at a time.

Review

In the first novella of the Kilts and Kisses series, Scottish lass Ceana Gunn lost her parents a few years earlier, and now she and her younger sister are beholden to their cold uncle, aunt, and cousin. After she accidentally trespasses onto the land of the neighboring enemy clan, she meets one of its guards, Luthias, and her future seems a bit brighter.

Luthias MacKay, however, is no guard. He’s the laird’s son but wants nothing more in his life than to train his pet birds. To force Luthias to learn responsibility, his father decrees he must marry, but after Luthias meets Ceana, the notion of marriage no longer seems so bad.

This is sweet, sensual, short story about two people searching for someone to understand them. The H/h are strong, intelligent characters, but miscommunication pushes obstacles in their way.

Though I liked the story, it ended very abruptly with unanswered questions. (Why did Ceana’s cousin choose to help her and Luthias? Why didn’t Uncle John face justice for his crimes?) Anyway, there weren’t any typos from what I could tell. I enjoyed Ms. Roberts’ writing style and would like to read more of her books.
