Blurb for Trevor’s Redemption, my contribution
The danger and lies are more than she can handle.
Shea O’Bannon feels like a fifth wheel around her romantically paired-off friends, but there’s too much slime in the dating pool for her to bother with it. Then she sees her two-timing ex, Trevor Madero, serenading the mostly female crowd at a live-music bar. God knows trouble follows him around, but her desire for him rushes back in anyway. After he rescues her from a handsy drunk, temptation takes over.
Determined to prove he never stepped out on Shea, Trevor slides back into her life—and her heart—with forever in mind. Even with the wall he keeps up to protect her, his secret criminal life weighs heavy on his soul and drives a wedge between them.
When the truth comes out and his enemies target them both, they’ll have to fight for their love, or kiss it goodbye.
Tagline: Will the truth send her running, or will she fight for the man she loves?
Excerpt for Trevor’s Redemption:
As his phone continued to charge, he tapped the app for his favorite R&B radio station. Smooth guitar riffs and throaty lyrics flowed from the speakers. “Ah, perfect. Can’t get better than Ella Fitzgerald.”
Shea tilted her head and smiled. “Why are you a blues-and-jazz-type of guy?”
He grabbed an onion, carrot, and green pepper from the fridge. “Thank Sergio for that. He moved into the house next door to mine when I was about ten years old.” As she washed the vegetables, he pulled two cutting boards from a bottom cabinet and opened the package of chicken. “One night when my parents were arguing, I snuck out to the backyard and heard the most amazing sound—the blues. Sergio was strumming his guitar on his back porch and caught me watching him from the fence. He invited me over, told me stories about the musicians he’d played with and the clubs he’d performed in when he was younger.”
“That sounds fascinating.” She grabbed a knife from the wooden cutlery block and chopped the pepper.
“I visited him every chance I could. He gave me one of his old guitars and taught me how to play it.” His cheeks heated. He hadn’t thought of Sergio in years, let alone said his name aloud. “Dad smashed the guitar.”
“I’m sorry. I’m sure Sergio didn’t blame you.” Shea squeezed his forearm.
Ow! He winced, drawing back, and nearly kicked himself for the frown puckering her eyebrows. “I dropped a two-by-four at work today. My arms are a little banged up.” The lie turned his stomach.
She pushed up his shirtsleeves to his elbows. “Damn. A board did this?”
He clamped his jaw as she feathered her fingers across a purple splotch on his forearm. Could she tell the difference between defensive fight marks and accidental blows? If only Del hadn’t landed so many good strikes on Trevor’s arms.
“I should’ve noticed these earlier, but your tattoos hide them well.” She straightened his sleeves. “Is there anything you want to tell me?”
He seized up. No accusation lined Shea’s voice, but her gentle plea nearly unlocked the cage keeping his secrets. He shrugged, playing dumb, and poured canola oil into a skillet. As the golden liquid heated, he filled a pot with water and set it on the stove to heat as well.
She continued cutting the vegetables. “About Sergio?”
“Right. He didn’t blame me, but the damage was done. Dad threatened to break his legs if he didn’t stay away from me, and Sergio moved away a month later.”
“Why didn’t he stand up for you?”
“He tried, but my dad was six feet tall and a good two-hundred-and-fifty pounds. Sergio was a skinny dude.” Trevor diced up the half-frozen chicken and bit the inside of his cheek to keep his face impassive as his sore, roughened knuckles burned. He dropped the pieces into the sizzling oil. “I didn’t play the guitar again until I turned fifteen.”
“At least your father didn’t destroy your love of music.” She scraped the vegetables into the simmering water.
“No way would I give him that much power over me.”
The bastard had already wielded enough.
Trevor closed his eyes. The memory of his father’s drunk-red face, harsh bellows, and ham-fisted slaps flashed through his mind in a movie reel he’d rather toss out with the trash. If Ryzor hadn’t given him a guitar on his birthday, he probably never would’ve picked up an instrument again. Where else would he find a semblance of peace in his fucked-up life?
