“I want to help you.”
He pressed a kiss on her forehead. “You have, more than you know.”
Their lips locked again. Lucas flexed his oh-so-tempting arms and seized every bit of space between them. Pleasure spiraled through her as he cupped her bottom. She wrapped her leg around his and rubbed against him. He released her and stepped back so fast she stumbled forward on weak knees.
“I apologize.” Lucas grasped her arms, steadied her, and then clutched his hands behind his back. He stared down at the road. “I never meant to harass you. You’re a respectable lady and should be treated as such.”
“What?” Sexy men in old-fashioned clothes didn’t harass her in the woods often enough—okay, never—but his expert mouth and hands were to die for. She wanted to taste him again. Craved it. To hell with propriety. She reached for him, but he stiffened and drew away. Damn it. She better behave herself. “Fine. You’re right.” Not, she silently bit back. “Sometimes, I say or do unladylike things. Ignore me when I do.”
“I could never ignore you. You’re the most fascinating woman I’ve ever encountered.” Lucas glanced back at her, his cheeks ruddy. He strode toward Beast, who grazed on the blossoms of an overgrown shrub.
She grinned, not bothering to hide it, as Lucas led the animal back onto the road.
“We should go. It’s close to noon, and more travelers will be afoot soon.” He gently clasped her hand. “I intend to take you to Kenway Manor. As my official guest, Miss Jaye Ramsey, I claim responsibility for you until your memory returns and you are safely home. Although you seem to remember much about yourself and your family except for where you hail and how you ended up in a cave.”
Jaye faked a shrug of nonchalance. “I can’t choose what my mind remembers.”
His lips pressed together and parted with a pop. “You may stay in my care for as long as you require it.” He handed Jaye her belongings, hauled himself into the saddle, and then clasped her arm to help her up behind him.
She settled her hands on his waist. For the first time since she’d met him, he didn’t flinch or scowl at her touch.
