#BookReview: “The River Runs Silent” by Kathryn Beck

Blurb

What happens when the life she left behind refuses to stay buried?

Private Investigator Devanie Hutchins defines her life by what she used to be. Former homicide detective, former foster kid, former mother. And former college sweetheart of Texas Congressman Jackson Everett.

When Jack’s sister is brutally murdered, Dev and Jack are forced to set their painful history aside and work together to find the killer. Jack may be driven by justice, but Dev is haunted by something far more dangerous—her need for absolution from a past that could destroy them both.

The investigation points to a shadowy boyfriend and a deeply personal crime scene, yet Dev’s gut warns that a critical piece of the truth remains hidden. With time running out and the past tightening its grip, Dev must decide how much she’s willing to sacrifice to uncover the truth. Some secrets don’t just ruin careers. They can take everything that matters, including the man she still loves.

Review

Former homicide detective turn private investigator, Dev Hutchins is no stranger to loss. Then her past comes rearing back when her former college sweetheart, now-Texas congressman, Jack Everett, asks her to look into the murder of his sister, Sydney. Things get messy between them as they work together to find the killer, and Dev soon learns that to solve the case, she might lose Jack all over again.

This story sure gets you with all the feels. From suspense, regret, longing, and love, you’re navigating a lot. Dev has lived a hard life, and her relationship with Jack, then and now, is just as difficult. Sometimes, love takes work, but that makes it all the sweeter and real.

Well-written with a sharp, clear voice, The River Runs Silent is an excellent story about family, loss, and finding yourself. Highly recommended!
