Today, we have the writing duo Amanda Nelson & Lisa-Marie Potter, writing as Nelson Potter, in the hotseat. They’re here to discuss their new book, so let’s jump into the questions.
What kind of research did you do for Just What the Doctor Hired? Did you travel, use the Internet, speak with experts on a topic, etc?
We researched medical jargon and information to be as accurate as possible, having both main characters in the medical field. Yearly, we travel to Seattle-where the book is located-and while we are there, we pay attention to any details and locations we may need or want to use for the book.
Neat! I’ve always wanted to visit Seattle. Hope you had fun there! How did you pick your characters’ names for Just What the Doctor Hired?
For the MMC, we used the first name of the actor for whom we based the physical description. As for our FMC, we looked on baby naming sites and found one we both agreed on.
Yep, baby name sites. I go there, too, when choosing my character names. Are your characters based on anyone you know?
Not usually. Some side characters can be based on people we know (with their permission) or at least share their names. But our main characters are original from our imaginations.
Do any of your characters take over and write the book themselves? Who?
All of our characters write the books themselves. We are pantsers, meaning we write by the seat of our pants, and therefore, our characters’ personalities take over the plot and drive the story.
Haha. I’m the total opposite–a plotter–but there are so many ways to write. What do you prefer: ebook, print, or audiobook? Why?
Lisa-Marie: My preference is to sit and read with a print book, however, time doesn’t always allow for that and audiobooks are a convenient way to escape reality while on the go.
Amanda: Depends on my mood. Lately, I have only had time for audiobooks, but I like the convenience of an ebook on my phone, but a print book feels good in my hands if I have the time.
How long have you been writing? When did you decide to become an author?
We have been writing for eight years, but only taking it seriously since 2020. In the beginning we were both reading the same book series, and had our own ideas of where the plot was going. Upon the release of the last book, our theories were debunked and because we loved our ideas so much, Lisa-Marie suggested we try to write a book of our own, and here we are.
It’s great that you decided to go into publishing. What did you do when you received your first Acceptance Letter?
Our acceptance letter from our agent, Nicole Payne of Copps Literary, had us screaming in our chairs. Unfortunately, we live in different states, so we couldn’t go out and celebrate, otherwise we would have.
Wow. You landed an agent. Congrats! We all need a little inspiration in our lives. What’s your favorite quote and why?
“Believe you can and you’re halfway there.” Theodore Roosevelt. Writing is hard, and the industry is even harder, but having a positive attitude during your journey can go a long way.
That’s a great quote from Teddy! I’m thrilled that you shared it. Any advice for the aspiring authors out there? Particularly those who are feeling a little discouraged?
Find your tribe. Having a group of writers who can support you and help you hone your craft with honest feedback is essential. Also, get thick skin. Rejection and criticism are all part of the process. The sooner you learn this, the smoother your writing journey becomes.
Exactly! I couldn’t have said it better. How do you market your books? What do you find more effective?
We’ve tried a number of things—ads on Facebook, X, and Amazon. We’ve used Book Buzz, blog tours, and free author interviews. One marketing tool we found particularly successful was a Goodreads giveaway, where we found lots of exposure for a good price. We are also active across several social media platforms.
Wonderful. Thank you so much for visiting!

Student Autumn Haze’s motto is: no men until she completes her Bachelor of Nursing degree. Years before, Autumn learned the hard way men are just a distraction she can’t afford until she’s established her career and what she wants. While moonlighting as a Plus One companion pays the bills, she struggles to follow her rules after meeting her newest contract. Pediatric Hospitalist Jensen Edwards is still recovering from a bad breakup that left him the talk of the hospital. Now he’s receiving a Best Doctor’s award, but after he hires Autumn as his plus one, Jensen is on edge. If word gets out that he hired a companion, rumors are bound to circulate, making work unbearable—again. Their chemistry as a fake couple is undeniable, but can a chance at a real relationship override their fear of commitment?
Excerpt:
Jensen leaned forward, his lips rasping against my ear. “Make me look good¾she’s watching.”
I shook, an involuntary shiver running down my neck and into my spine. This will be fun. “You got it.” I licked my lips, slow and seductive, before wrapping my arms around his neck, my hips pressed against him, and swayed to the beat.
Jensen’s hands slid down my waist.
I felt his fingers dig into my skin, and I couldn’t stop my heart from racing. Jensen’s performance had me coiled like a spring, ready to jump at any moment. If Kayla was watching, she couldn’t deny my chemistry with Jensen. I chanced a glance. The woman’s deep scowl and curled lip was all the answer I needed. A+ for Jensen’s performance. “She looks furious.”
“Good.”
