#BookReview: “Magnolia Mystic” by Lisa Kessler

Blurb

Skye Olson is a psychic like her mother, and her grandmother before her, but a bad break up with the man she thought was her soulmate has left her confidence in her abilities shaken. While she’s in crisis, a real estate tycoon from Atlanta swoops in with his eyes on her shop.

Colton Hayes spent his mortal life plundering royal ships with his pirate crew, but one holy relic changed everything. Now he and the rest of the crew protect the port of Savannah from their captain who traded his cutlass for a fountain pen.

When Colton discovers the captain wants to build a hotel in the heart of historic Savannah, he sets out to stop him, but nothing could prepare him for the sexy smile and violet eyes of the Magnolia Mystic.

Review

In book one of the Sentinels of Savannah series, psychic Skye Olson trespasses into an “employee only” section on a replica pirate ship and runs across the ship’s sexy owner, Colton Hayes. She’s fascinated with pirates and lost treasure, but she’s not interested in starting up a new romance, especially with a man who can charm her out of her panties with just his smile.

Two centuries earlier, Colton and his Sea Dog crew drank from the Holy Grail and became immortal. It’s just bad luck that Colton meets the woman who’s prophesied to be his soulmate soon after the cup goes missing and his immortality begins to fade.

Colton and Skye have great chemistry. They fell in love quickly, but it felt believable.

This book reads more like a prequel than it does as book one for two reasons: it sets up the universe with strong indications of future story lines; and there are some unanswered questions/cliffhangers. It ends with a HFN (happy for now) for Colton and Skye (he’s still immortal and she’s not), so I hope this will be better wrapped up once the Grail is recovered later on.

I liked the story, but there were a few typos and the pacing was off at times. Granted, the copy I read is an older one from the Magnolia and Moonshine series (a shared theme series in which several authors wrote a story), so maybe the book has been re-edited when it was re-released as part of the Sentinels of Savannah series. I hope so.

Anyway, this is my first book from Ms. Kessler, and I plan to read more.
