#BookReview: “Unholy” by Kathryn Amurra

Blurb

In her last semester of college, Beth D’Angelo has one goal—to get her thermodynamics experiment to work so she can graduate. But everything changes when she nearly runs over a mysterious stranger with her car—a man whose hauntingly handsome face fills her with an inexplicable sense of dread. Suddenly, her failed experiment becomes the least of her worries.

Strong, alluring, and centuries-old, Thomas Callahan is a vampire whose powers are as dangerous as his secrets. After Beth nearly runs him over, her sweet nature and innate fear of him become an irresistible challenge—to corrupt her innocence.

As they spend more time together, Beth’s fear dissipates and becomes something Thomas finds himself craving more than blood. Knowing it is only a matter of time before she discovers what he truly is, and with two hunters on his trail seeking vengeance, Thomas must decide if loving Beth is worth risking both their lives.

Review

In book 3 of the Heart’s True Desire series, college student Beth is driving home late one night in icy weather when she accidentally hits something with her car. Then she meets Thomas, a strange man who instantly frightens her.

Thomas is fascinated with the pure, kindhearted woman and sets out to seduce her. As a vampire, he’s used to getting what he wants, and Beth proves to be an enticing challenge. The more time he spends with her, the more his humanity resurfaces, and before long, he’s more man than monster.

I’m a big fan of paranormal romances, so I was excited to give this one a chance.

I liked Thomas well enough. He was handsome, charming, and started out as seductively wicked, as all good vampires should be. But that didn’t last long. I’ve read so many vampire romances over the years that I’ve lost count, and Thomas has to be the nicest vamp out of all of them.

I couldn’t connect with Beth at all. From her religious beliefs to her extreme naïveté, Beth was prudish, selfish, and melodramatic. I felt bad for her ex-boyfriend, Ryan, whom she strung along for a year with zero intention of having a real romantic relationship with him. Even though Ryan turned out to be a creep later on, I still liked him more than I did her.

Even though the book was well-written, except for some minor typos, it didn’t hold my attention. I don’t mind clean/sweet romances, but I’m picky when it comes to slow-burn. And since this was a vampire story, I expected gore, mind games, and sexy times. Unfortunately, none of that happened. But honestly, that’s okay because there aren’t a lot of sweet and clean vampire romances out there. I’m sure there’s a market for them, so this book could be exactly what some readers are looking for.

For those who enjoy fade-to-black romances with timid religious virgins and chivalrous vampires, you’ll probably really enjoy this book.
