Divorced dad Birley Haynes is too busy raising his children and running his family’s music academy to start a relationship. Then Harmony Holdich, his high school sweetheart, returns home to Willow Springs, Vermont for Christmas and falls into his bed. She brings light and fun back into his life, but he can’t brush aside the threatening incidents around his workplace.
Harmony hadn’t expected a complication like Birley, especially so soon after the death of her unfaithful husband. With her life a mess, she plans to move across the country and start over. All she can offer him is a fling, but her heart yearns for more.
When the threats rise, how will Birley keep his children safe and convince Harmony to give love another chance?
“Fuck!” White-hot lightning lanced through him, his orgasm tearing from his testicles. Stars danced in his eyes. He kissed her long and hard, stealing her breath and loving her taste. His limbs shook, his vision winking in and out. He pulled free and collapsed beside her. A deep breath filled his air-starved lungs.
She panted and snuggled against him. “Wow, Birley. Your technique has improved too.” She gently gripped his semi-hard erection.
Air lodged in his throat. He thrust into her grasp and shuddered. “Easy. Your touch is like fire, ice, and electricity all wrapped into one.”
“You’re sensitive, huh?” She thumbed the bulbous head, then teased her fingernails through the hair dotting his abdomen. “I could lay here all night.”
“Good. I have no intention of letting you go.” He groaned as he pumped himself, relieving the last bit of lust thickening the shaft. Stickiness coated his palm. He stilled. “We didn’t use a condom.” How the hell could he forget that?
“I’m clean. You?”
“No worries, but what if you get pregnant?”
“If only I’d be so lucky.” She sighed heavily as he scowled. “Then again, I can’t hold a baby past the first trimester. I don’t want to go through that pain again.”
He clutched her close. What would his life be like without Andy and Kay? He didn’t want to imagine it. “I’m sorry for what you’ve been through, but Harmony, I won’t walk away from you if you do get pregnant. I’ll go with you to all the doctor appointments. If we lose the baby, then we do. If not, we’ll raise it together.”
“This conversation is pointless.” She withdrew from him and wrapped the sheet around her. “It’s hard for me to get pregnant in the first place, so I doubt we have anything to worry about. But thank you for wanting to stick by me. Not that you could. I wouldn’t expect you to give up everything you have and drag your kids to California.”
Of course not. She should move back to Willow Springs. What if she refused? He would have to uproot his kids, forsake his inheritance, and throw a wrench in his parents’ retirement plans. Was Harmony worth it? He smoothed the fine lines around her eyes. She was worth everything, but he wouldn’t rip Andy and Kay away from their home and family.
“Rest, babe.” He reached across the bed and turned off the light. After she cuddled back into his arms, he kissed her forehead. The music faded as the last track ended, and her soft breathing echoed in his ears. In the morning, he would buy a box of condoms. No more stupidity on his part. When his lover left, she wouldn’t be taking his unborn child with her.
