#BookReview – “The Enforcer” by Abigail Owen

Blurb

Death comes for everyone. Even Drake Chandali. The aging process that twists all unmated dragon shifters’ bodies into something useless has taken hold of his body centuries early. A mate could have reversed the process, but now it’s too late. To protect his team of enforcers, he leaves, and comes face to face with the woman he’d thought was human when he saved her from a fire months before.

Except she’s not human. She’s a mate.

Camilla Carrillo almost lost her family to wildfire. To discover she’s fated to mate a creature made of flame and rage, and become one herself, should be terrifying. But somehow a rightness settles inside her, especially when she’s around the glowering red dragon shifter who wants nothing to do with her.

When Drake learns Cami bears his mark–the same mark as the High King–he refuses to believe she’s meant to be his. It’s too late. How could he turn Cami only to take her with him to the grave? At the same time, he can’t walk away. Hiding her from the corrupt, rotting High King might be the last honorable thing Drake ever does with the little time he has left.

Review

In the fourth book in the Fire’s Edge series, Huracán enforcer Drake Chandali is suffering from degenerating nerve loss since he’s an umated dragon shifter. The only thing that can save his life is finding his destined mate, but the only woman he’s interested in is a human. So he gives up his team and joins Rune, a rogue dragon, expecting to live out the rest of his short life in solitude.

After Camilla Carrillo exhibit signs that she’s a dragon mate, she leaves her family behind to protect them and finds shelter with Rune and his other rogue dragons. There she reunites with Drake, a man she doesn’t quite remember but feels a strong connection to.

Drake and Cami are my favorite characters so far in this series. He’s so grumpy, stoic, and honorable, and she’s the toughest heroine yet. They connected easily despite the obstacles between them (especially Drake’s hardheadedness), and the sex scenes were scorching!

Rune, Finn, Levi, and the rest of the enforcer team were great as usual. I’m definitely interested in learning more Skyler and her uncle Tyrek. The secret rogue base in the Andes was pretty cool.

Even though I enjoyed the story and wanted to rate it five stars, everything leading to the final battle/climax was hard to follow. Drake, Cami, Rune, and the Huracán team were weaving so many false stories to tell the Alaz team and the Alliance that I couldn’t keep all the lies straight. Even after everything was settled, I still had questions.

Anyway, Ms. Owen’s writing style is full of description and emotions. She comes up with some fascinating similes and metaphors that make me smile. Even though all the books in the Fire’s Edge series are standalones, the spin-off series, Inferno Rising, is taking place at the same time as this one. I’m looking forward to reading those and the next book in this series.
