#BookReview: “Where the Road Ends” by Kathryn Beck

Blurb

Bartender Mara Sawyer has sixty days to turn her life around. If she can’t, Mara will lose the chance to regain custody of her daughter. Never having envisioned her life as a living, breathing, public service announcement for the Wyoming judicial system, Mara embraces the judge’s harsh rebuke. Finding a steady job will be easy, finishing school will be easy. Eluding the distraction of the new swaggering Texan, Luke Whitten, will be anything but easy.

With all her cards on the table, Luke and Mara build a strong friendship and along the way, she gives herself permission to fall in love again. When Mara’s ex offers up full custody in exchange for betraying Luke, Mara must choose — her daughter’s happiness, or her own.

Review

After losing custody of her daughter to her emotionally abusive ex-husband, Mara Sawyer is struggling to rebuild her life and take nursing classes. She’s constantly battling self-doubt and her own anger issues while having to face naysayers every day who look down on her. Then she meets Luke who’s just passing through town. He has his own share of problems, but together, they find a way to push past the adversity dogging them and earn a bit of happiness.

I liked Luke right away, but it took me a little while to connect with Mara. I understood her frustration, but she was impulsive and acted out at the worst of times. However, as she matured and grew as a person, I related to her better. Their relationship was very emotional, a roller coaster ride of ups and downs. Make sure you have tissues handy before starting this novel!

The secondary characters added depth and provided lots of tension for Mara and Luke.

If you’re in the mood for a slow burn, tearjerker romance, Where the Road Ends will fit the bill.
