Excerpt

(Background Info on Scene: After two of his enforcers assault Drina at the pool, he kills the men and takes her upstairs to shower and comfort her.)

Rubén stroked her wet hair. “Glad to be of service.” He shut off the valves and opened the shower door to grab two fluffy towels from the shelf. The cool air raised gooseflesh on his arms. He dried her off first, then stripped off his soaked clothes and dried himself.

She headed to the bedroom and dressed in silk pajamas before climbing into bed.

Water dripped from his hair down his neck and chest, leaving cool trails in their wake. After he wrapped the towel around his waist, he tucked her in under the blanket and sat on the edge of the mattress to rub her back, offering what comfort he could.

“Thank you for saving me.” She curled into a ball and succumbed to sleep.

Rubén hung his head. He’d almost arrived too late. His alter ego, Duque, longed to chop up the dead men with a chainsaw and spread the body parts all over the state. That was something his hotheaded brother used to do for fun—something Rubén had never even dreamed of doing until now.

Anguish, guilt, and death had birthed his darker side years earlier. He’d killed innocents. Bathed in blood. Destroyed lives. Every second, he hated himself and the ones responsible.

His father. His legacy. The Lozano name.

No longer was he the spare. The second son. As king, he would do what any decent king should do—lead his people to a brighter future, teach them a better way. Some of them, however, were beyond saving. Like Fernando and Marcos, the fucking would-be rapists who dared to touch his woman.
