#BookReview – “The Cane, The Puzzle, and Magic” by Vicky Burkholder

Blurb

Facing down an ancient evil, special agent Elizabeth St. John is outnumbered, outgunned, and outmatched. Local cop Kaeden Pike is the perfect choice to help her but letting him—or anyone—into her life and heart is the most difficult challenge she’s ever faced. Kaeden has never found the one person who fit him, until now. But how can he convince Liz that they make the perfect pair, especially when the end of the world is coming? Someone has to gather the forces of good to win this fight, but when Liz accepts the role, she finds that being alone isn’t a choice she has to make. Almost losing Kaeden to the evil who already took the only other person she’s ever trusted convinces her to open her heart and let him in…where he belongs.

Review

Elizabeth St. John is a special agent for OWL, a secret agency tasked with taking down supernatural bad guys. Liz, herself, is more than human with abilities that come in handy with her dangerous line of work. She doesn’t like to get close to people, but she disobeys her own rule when it comes to her best friend, Charly, and her sometimes lover, Kaeden. When her biggest enemy targets her adopted town and the people she loves, she’ll stop at nothing to protect them.

Liz is such a smart, tough-as-nails woman. She doesn’t take crap off anyone, but that means Kaeden has his work cut out for him in freeing her caged heart. They fit great together. The sex scenes faded to black, but they had great chemistry. Love their banter!

Ms. Burkholder’s writing is fast paced and snappy. The Cane, The Puzzle, and Magic is a fun paranormal romance with great characters set amid a vivid small-town backdrop. If that’s your thing, give it a try.
