#BookReview – “The Traitor” by Abigail Owen

Blurb

Decades ago, rogue dragon shifter Rune Abaddon took a stand against the decaying, corrupt systems governing their people. He now uses his bad-ass reputation to protect the innocent as it all comes crashing down. But he’s pushed the limits one too many times. His hideout is destroyed, his few allies are scattered and hiding, and the Alliance has placed a dead-or-alive bounty on his head, making him the most wanted dragon in the western hemisphere.

And then the most enticing woman he’s ever met barges into his mountain, demanding an audience.

Hadyn Reece’s future was ripped away long ago. The man fated to be her mate was murdered alongside her parents before Hadyn was old enough to be turned, leaving her to be raised and trained by her dead mate’s parents in the dragon shifter world. Now, the Alliance has come for the only family she has left. It’s a good thing she was raised by dragons, because the only one who can help her save them is a traitor she’d be smart to fear.

Especially when his dragon decides she’s theirs.

Review

In the sixth book in the Fire’s Edge series, rogue dragon shifter Rune Abaddon has spent decades going against his own kind to protect unmated human women and fellow dragon rogues. All the dragon clans have condemned him. He doesn’t care what anyone thinks of him, but deep down, he’s hurt that he lost the respect and friendship of the Huracán enforcers, his former team.

Hadyn Reece was only a child when she first exhibited dragon signs that signified her as a human mate to a dragon. But her future mate was killed off, and she was adopted by her mate’s parents who loved and raised her as their own. Now Hadyn’s adoptive parents have been captured, so she goes to the most infamous of rogue dragons for help—Rune.

Rune and Hadyn are perfect together. Though they believe they can’t be fated mates, that doesn’t stop them from falling in love and choosing one another against all odds and limitations. When I first started this series, Rune’s book was the one I was most looking forward to. I’ve always had a soft spot for the bad guy, the antihero, the selfless one who does bad for the greater good, who makes the tough decisions. He needed a woman who was just as tough and smart as him, and Ms. Owen delivered that in spades with Hadyn.

Throughout the course of this series, Rune has slowly been closing the gap between him and the Huracán enforcers who were like brothers to him, and now that aching hole is finally sealed. It was wonderful to see him fight and laugh alongside his old friends again and for his team to finally apologize to him as he well deserves. I loved revisiting the original characters—Finn, Aiden, Drake, Levi, their mates, and the other dragons on the team. Even though the Fire’s Edge series has come to an end, I hope there will be more books to come (Hall, Kanta, Rivin, and Keighan need HEAs too!).

This is probably my favorite book in the series. It ties in with the Inferno Rising spin-off series and takes place between books 3 and 4, for those readers who like to read in chronological order.

I’ve read A LOT of shifter books from various authors, but Ms. Owen’s books are some of the more memorable ones. I highly recommend them.
