Tears welled in Jaye’s eyes. “I love you, Lucas. I tried to fight the pull between us, but I can’t.” She reached for him, then paused and dropped her arms at her sides. “I’d always hoped the man I fell in love with would also be my best friend. I found him in you, but do you love me?”
Panic clenched his chest. He straightened from his lean and gripped his glass so hard he feared it might shatter. He set it aside and dragged in air.
“Even if your answer is no, you owe me the truth.”
“What is love, Jaye?” Lucas tunneled his hands through his hair. The ribbon that held back his curly locks fell to the floor. “Will I treat you as my father treated my mother? Will I indulge in mistresses while you warm my bed and bear my children? No. Will I provide you with housing, fine clothing, and food? Will I obey your every whim and treat you as a princess? Yes.” He tugged on the lapels of his frock. “I’ll do my best to support you and earn your respect. Is that what you call love?”
She fisted her trembling hands in her skirts. “Can you live without me?”
Coldness settled over him. He’d endured much heartache already. He could survive the slip of a woman before him. “Yes, I would manage fine.”
She squeezed her eyes shut and ducked her head.
Lucas hurried to her and cupped her cheek. Her tears smeared his palm. He lifted her face and stared down into her glittering emerald eyes. “No tears, jaybird. Love may come later, as I’ve said before. For now, we need to focus on the repair plans and what to do about the farm. Although these tasks are typically a man’s domain, I welcome your opinions and will take them to heart. This will be a united effort.”
“A united effort, yes. Thank you for telling me the truth, Lucas.” She kissed the corner of his lips and dashed from the room.
